Sweeney Todd
From the iconic opening chords Sondheim’s masterpiece – almost as much opera as musical – was electrifying to work on. This double-cast production for London School of Musical Theatre saw my chance to reunite with director Graham Hubbard, who I’ve known for 13 years, and was glad to work with again. And there’s no better director of this particular show due to his personal connection to the piece throughout his career.
His was a radical re-staging, set in an abattoir, and designed to great effect by Bob Sterrett, who also designed costumes.
And the venue for this revival was the Bridewell Theatre, just off Fleet Street, and where one of Sondheim’s works received its debut in 1997, and the great man is reputed one night to have slept in a cupboard!
On a personal note, my thanks to Siyan Ltd and Sparks Theatrical Hire for their support with lighting hires, to bring the Bridewell into the 21st century.Photographs by Steve Gregson
